Product Details

A Vortex tube is a compact industrial cooling device that uses compressed air to produce a continuous stream of cold air. It is widely used for CNC machining, cutting, grinding, drilling and other industrial processes where localized cooling is required.

Unlike traditional refrigeration equipment, a Vortex tube does not require refrigerant or a complicated refrigeration circuit. It uses the vortex tube principle to separate compressed air into hot and cold air streams, providing targeted cooling directly where it is needed.

How Does a Vortex tube Work?

The working principle of a Vortex tube is based on the separation of compressed air inside a vortex generator.

Before entering the Vortex tube, the compressed air should be filtered to remove moisture, oil and other contaminants. The recommended inlet pressure is approximately 6.9 bar / 100 psi, while the applicable pressure range is generally 4–9 bar.

The compressed air enters the vortex generator at high speed. Inside the generator, the air begins to rotate rapidly and forms a vortex flow.

The airflow is then separated into two different streams:

1. Outer Vortex – Hot Air

The outer layer of the rotating airflow moves toward the rear of the vortex tube.

During this process, the outer vortex carries heat away from the inner airflow and becomes a hot air stream.

The hot air is discharged from the rear of the vortex generator. A silencer can be installed at the hot-air outlet to help reduce operating noise.

This hot-air discharge is an important part of the vortex tube working principle because it allows heat energy to be removed from the cold-air stream.

2. Inner Vortex – Cold Air

At the same time, an inner vortex moves in the opposite direction.

After losing part of its heat energy, the inner airflow becomes a low-temperature cold air stream and returns toward the front of the vortex generator.

The cold air is then discharged through the front outlet and directed to the required cooling point through the flexible hose.

This allows a Vortex tube to provide cold airflow directly onto a cutting tool, work piece or machining area.

Adjustable Cold Air Temperature and Airflow

One of the useful features of an industrial Vortex tube is that the cold-air performance can be adjusted according to the application.

A regulating valve at the rear of the vortex generator controls the proportion of hot and cold airflow.

By adjusting the valve, users can change the relationship between:

  • Cold air temperature
  • Cold air flow
  • Hot air flow

For applications that require a lower temperature, the system can be adjusted toward greater cooling performance. For applications that require more cold-air flow rather than the lowest possible temperature, the airflow balance can be adjusted accordingly.

Under suitable operating conditions, the cold-air outlet temperature can reach approximately -34°C (-30°F), with a maximum temperature reduction of around 45–50°C compared with the compressed-air inlet temperature.

Actual cooling performance depends on inlet air temperature, compressed-air pressure, air quality, flow rate and the selected vortex tube configuration.

Why Use a Vortex tube for CNC Machining?

A Vortex tube for CNC machining provides localized cooling without the need for liquid coolant.

During turning, milling, drilling or grinding, heat can accumulate around the cutting tool and work piece. Directing cold air toward this area can help control machining temperature and provide a cleaner cooling method.

Typical CNC applications include:

  • CNC turning
  • CNC milling
  • Drilling
  • Grinding
  • Cutting
  • Sawing
  • Tool cooling
  • Workpiece cooling

The cold airflow can be positioned close to the machining point using a flexible hose, making it easy to adjust the cooling direction.

For CNC applications where only a specific area requires cooling, localized cold airflow can be more practical than cooling the entire machine.

Simple Installation and Flexible Cooling

Another advantage of the industrial Vortex tube is its compact structure.

The system mainly requires a suitable compressed-air supply, air filtration and a connection to the Vortex tube. The flexible outlet hose can then be positioned toward the required cooling area.

This makes installation relatively simple and allows the cooling position to be changed according to different machining processes.

The Vortex tube can also be integrated into existing CNC machines and industrial equipment without requiring a large cooling system.

Compressed Air Quality Is Important

Because the Vortex tube operates with compressed air, air quality has an important effect on system performance.

Filtered and clean compressed air is recommended. Water, oil and particles in the compressed-air system can affect the operation and service life of the equipment.

For this reason, customers should consider:

  • Compressed-air pressure
  • Air filtration
  • Air consumption
  • Inlet air temperature
  • Required cold-air temperature
  • Required cold-air flow
  • Installation position

Selecting the correct configuration according to these conditions helps achieve more stable cooling performance.
